FOURTH SEAL OPENED
Leslie M. John
From Revelation 6:7-8
“And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth” (Revelation 6:7-8)
It was a pale horse sent out to the earth this time when the fourth seal was opened by Lord Jesus Christ, who was the ”Lamb slain” for our sake, the only one found worthy to take the scroll from the LORD Jehovah, who sat on the throne. He was the only one worthy to open the seven seals of the scroll. All power was given by the LORD Jehovah to Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is the express image of the Father. The LORD, who sat on the throne, lives forever and ever.
When the fourth seal was opened there was heard the voice of the fourth living creature, who proclaimed that a pale horse went out to the earth, and the name of the rider on the horse was Death; and Hell followed death. The fourth living creature had the face of an eagle, indicative of the power Lord Jesus Christ wields in the universe and on every living being. The voice of the living creature proclaimed that all power was given by God to the rider on the pale horse to kill fourth part of the earth, and with hunger and death, and with the beasts of the earth.
Man was disobedient from the beginning and every time he transgressed the commandments of God he was chastened. When it came to the disobedience of His chosen people, the children of Israel He was very stern in His chastisement and did not spare even Jerusalem.
Some of the glaring instances of disobedience by the children of Israel were mentioned in Ezekiel Chapter 14.
The LORD was very stern in his warning and asked prophet Ezekiel as to whether the LORD should be consulted by the elders for lenience toward their forward behavior in resorting to idol-worship; nay. The LORD said if anyone of the house of Israel took idols into one’s heart and worshipped them the LORD would chastise them according to the multitude of their idols.
“For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?” (Ezekiel 14:21)
Lord Jesus Christ was their Messiah and yet they rejected Him. It will be in the future that they realize after facing ”great tribulation” that He was their Messiah. Jesus said:
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” (Matthew 23:37)
“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21)
The unleashing of the power of God on the earth and earth-dwellers, in future, will be because in due season when it was appropriate for them to accept Lord Jesus Christ as their Messiah, they neglected Him and salvation. Jews and Gentiles, all alike, crucified Jesus on the cross thinking that by doing so, they were going to be winners but alas! It was not so. Their actions helped the purposes of God being fulfilled. It pleased the Father to bruise Him on the cross in order that He could become propitiation for us and whosoever confesses that Jesus as Lord, and believes in heart that God raised from the dead will receive salvation.
Lord Jesus Christ said all power is given to Him and He holds the power to the Death and Hades. After the ”great white throne” Judgment the death and hell will be cast into the ”lake of fire” along with those whose names were not found in the ”book of life”.
“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:11-15)
There is provision to escape from the ”great tribulation”. The word of God says…
”That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9)
