DAVID’s FERVOR AND ZEAL
Leslie M. John
“Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat” (1 Chronicles 28:11)
David’s heart for the LORD and his zeal to do service for Him was adorable, and our words may fall short of his real desire. He desired to build the temple for the LORD, but God said he cannot do it because his hands, as seen by God, had stains of blood because he was a man of wars. The LORD was with David and he acknowledged the LORD in all his ways. He failed in certain areas of his life but his zeal for the LORD, worship, service, and dedication to the LORD outweighed his failures. The LORD said that David was a man of His own heart.
Knowing that he cannot build the temple he has done, before his death, what best he could do for the building the House of the LORD. The LORD indeed honored David and attributed the building of the House of the LORD to him even though the physical construction was done by Solomon, his son.
David provided his knowledge, his expertise, his power, and his wealth for the building of the ‘House of the LORD’. He gave the pattern and plan and huge amount of wealth that was needed for the building of the temple by his son. He gave by weight for the things that are to be set up.
David admonished Solomon very lovingly yet firmly to be strong and know that God chose him to build a house for the sanctuary and then gave him the pattern of the porch, of house, of the treasuries of God, and the treasuries of the dedicated things, of the upper chambers, of the inner parlors, of the chambers round about, and of the place where mercy seat is to be set. It was not human decision but David gave the plan to Solomon as led by the Spirit. David said to Solomon that the LORD made him to understand in writing by His hand upon him even the works of the pattern.
David gave Solomon gold by weight for the things of gold, such as those things that are to be in the Holy Holies etc., instruments of all manner of service, silver for all instruments of silver by weight, and for all instruments of every kind of service. He also provided the things that are needed for Levites and Priests, for all the work of service in the House of the LORD, and for all the vessels of service in the House of the LORD. He gave gold by weight for each candlestick of gold and for the lamps of gold and weight of silver for each candlestick of silver and lamp of silver according to their usage. He gave gold by weight for the tables of showbread for every table and likewise silver for the tables of silver.
David also gave pure gold for the flesh-hooks, the bowls, the cups, gold by weight for each basin of gold, and silver by weight for each basin of silver. In addition, David gave refined gold by weight and gold for the pattern of chariot of the cherubims. The cherubims spread their wings towards one another facing opposite to each other covering the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
David advised Solomon once again to be courageous and be strong in the LORD and build the House of the LORD. He said ”fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD”.
”And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD” (1 Chronicles 28:20)
