Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The Word of God as revealed to Apostle Paul by the LORD Almighty through His son Jesus Christ is made available for us to understand the love of God towards us, and to take lessons from the teachings available in the Holy Scriptures, in order that we may live a holy life.

Paul realized that, wretched man as he was; it is possible to earn salvation only by believing in the finished works of Lord Jesus Christ; and never by attempting to keep the Law, because it is not possible for anyone to keep law in its entirety. The Law is spiritual and he served with his mind the law of God, but with flesh he served the law of sin (Ref. Romans 7:14-15).

When our body takes control over the mind it would end up in serving the law of sin, but when mind has the control over the body there is spiritual edification and we serve the law of God. Uncontrolled mind of a man or the mind that does not have control over bodily desires will damage man’s life not only on this earth, but in eternity as well.

Bible emphasizes that our minds should have control over our bodies and not vice-versa. It is quite often heard that there are people who live to eat, rather than eat to live and similar is the case when body controls the mind of a man. In our journey to eternity we should endeavor to gain spiritual benefits rather than seek bodily pleasures.

Law could not make anyone righteous and man can never be justified by the law. The law points to sin, and judges to death. The resolution to eternal life is found only in Jesus, the Son of God, who was sent from above in the likeness of sinful flesh. He bore our sin upon Himself, in order that our sin was judged on the cross.

By the substitutionary death of Lord Jesus Christ on the cross we are made righteous and the righteousness of the law was fulfilled in us. The believers in Christ, therefore, should pursue spiritual things rather than bodily desires. Those, whose bodies have control over their spiritual needs, do the things that please the body, but those who have control over their spirit pursue the things that the spirit needs. To allow dominance of bodily desires over spiritual needs is to seek death, but to allow dominance of spiritual desires over bodily desires is to seek life and peace.

It is because we are forgiven of our sins and justified as ‘not guilty’ of our sin we boldly say that there is no condemnation to us in Christ Jesus. Our goal should always be to pursue spiritual needs and not bodily pleasures. We are guaranteed and sealed with the promise of Holy Spirit everlasting life of peace, happiness, and joy. The law of spirit of life in Christ Jesus is made us free from the law of sin and death.

For a natural man, who understands death, as the world understands, it is the cessation of life, permanent loss of functioning of brain and consciousness, but for a man who understands the death of a believer in Christ, the death is separation of soul from the body, and the soul of a believer in Christ never dies. Soul is the synonym of mind, or consciousness, and it is redeemed from the death when he believes in Lord Jesus Christ as His savior and believes that God raised Him from death.

Fleshly desires that are the desires related to the body, such as seeking after money, power and sexual pleasures, excessive adornment, anger etc. are enmity to God because they are not subject to the law of God and they can never be a source of spiritual benefits. Those who please their bodily desires cannot please God. The believers in Christ have His Spirit in them and, therefore, they please God by seeking after spiritual things rather than the things that please bodily pleasures.

If anyone is not of the Spirit of Christ, then he is not of Christ, but if Christ is in anyone, one’s body is dead to sin, and the Spirit is life because of righteousness. The Spirit of God raised Jesus from the dead and if the Spirit of God lives in us, then the LORD who raised Jesus up from the dead, will quicken our mortal bodies by His Spirit that lives in us and will raise us as well to immortality in glorified bodies.

“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” (Romans 8:11)
