THEY ARE ONE
Leslie M. John
Jesus said: ”I and my Father are one” (John 10:30)
”If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him” (John 10:37-38)
Scribes and Pharisees had altercation with Lord Jesus Christ and spoke demeaning words to Him that they knew who His father was. They were indirectly pointing that Mary was pregnant even before Joseph married her. In the verses quoted above, Lord Jesus was asserting that He came from above and He and the Father in heaven are one. He was saying to the scribes and Pharisees that if He did not do the works of the Father in heaven, they may refuse to believe Him, but if He did the works of His Father in heaven, they may believe that the Father was in Him, and He in the Father.
Jesus had to use very hurting words to them and when they ventured to harm Him He quietly walked out from their midst and no one could do any harm to Him, because He was divine, and His time to die for the sins of men was not yet come.
”But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not”. (John 8:40-45)
Although Joseph did not father Jesus, yet it was by adopting Jesus as his son after marrying Mary that he had become a legal earthly father of Jesus. Joseph was a descendant from David’s lineage. Mary was a direct descendant from David’s lineage. Jesus by being born to Mary was a descendant of David and by adoption by Joseph was a descendant of David. Thus, Jesus had the right to David’s throne from father’s and mother’s lineage. Even though Jesus was born in the womb of Virgin Mary He was sinless because He was as Adam was before Adam sinned.
“But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 1:20)
Matthew Chapter 1 gives us the genealogy of Jesus Christ through Joseph, who was a descendant of David, and Luke 3 gives us his lineage through Mary. Jesus and His earthly parents fulfilled Mosaic Law.
”And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons” (Luke 2:21-24)
In calling Mary, ”Woman” Jesus did not disrespect her; neither was the word a disrespectful one among Jews. Joseph and Mary were earthly parents of Jesus, who was very conscientious of fifth commandment which reads,
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee”. (Exodus 20:12)
He was emphasizing a different relationship that He was the seed of the woman and that His mission was different. It is not to be construed that a man can approach Jesus through Mary alone. If Jesus yielded to the request of Mary without addressing her as “woman” there is every reason for us to believe that Jesus can be approached only through Mary.
At the time of His crucifixion Jesus saw his mother He said to His mother ”…Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother!…” Mary was not the mother of John, but Jesus entrusted her to his care. Read Behold Thy Son
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. (John 19:26-27)
”Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by”. (John 8:59)
According to Mosaic Law blasphemy of God is punishable by stoning to death. Inasmuch as scribes and Pharisees considered the claim of Jesus as blasphemy, if Jesus was not divine, He would have been stoned to death then and there! Jesus spoke truth and said to them that they shall know the truth. It was Jesus, who had the power to lay down His life, at due time, according to scriptures, and He did so according to Scriptures at due time.
Gnostics called Jesus a phantom (an appearance or illusion without material substance, as a dream image, mirage, or optical illusion). Gnosticism is a belief of self-understanding, self-realization and uniting with God. Gnostics devalue matter and regard spirit as the reality.
Christian Gnostics believed in spiritual knowledge and experience as the road to salvation and side stepped faith, Church and sacraments. Gnostics believe that Demiurge an evil god created universe and men are held captive in this universe in material world and that special knowledge, which is ‘gnosis’ is needed to achieve purity to emulate far too pure God.
According to them material world is evil and, therefore, man needs to practice abstinence from material wealth etc. They believe that Jesus came down from Spiritual world and was their good teacher. They do not believe in atoning sacrifice of Lord Jesus Christ and say that Jesus had a sprit body and not a physical body on His resurrection.
Peter testified that they made known unto them the power and coming of Lord Jesus Christ. They said that they were eye witnesses of his majesty and that they heard the voice that came down from heaven, while they were on the holy mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-18)
