LOOK UNTO JESUS

by Leslie John

Leslie M. John

Peter was about to sink because he feared

As long as Peter looked unto Jesus he was able to walk on the water just as Jesus himself was walking on the water, but when he feared seeing the wind boisterous, he started sinking. Peter, then, called upon his savior to save him. Jesus immediately stretched forth his hand and lifted him from sinking.

“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” Matthew 14:30-31

Jesus sent away multitudes of men, woman and children, whom he fed with five loaves and two fishes, and moved into a desert place. This was after he heard that John was beheaded. Jesus asked his disciples to go by ship to the other side of the sea and he went up into a mountain to pray until the evening. He was all alone there but the ship was in the midst of the sea and the strong winds blew and sea tossed with waves. Jesus went toward the ship in the night.

The disciples saw Jesus walking on the water and coming toward them, but they feared that it was a spirit and cried. It was then that Jesus their savior told them to be of good cheer and said it was he, who was walking toward them. Peter was eager to walk on water. Peter asked Jesus if Jesus could call him to walk on water toward him. When Peter sought help to go near to him Jesus said to him “come down out the ship”.

As Peter was making endeavors to walk toward Jesus he saw that the wind was boisterous, and got frightened. As soon as he got frightened, he started sinking and cried to Jesus saying “Lord, save me”. Jesus did not leave him helpless, but immediately stretched forth his hand and caught Peter. Jesus admonished him of his little faith.

Seeing that Peter was failing Jesus questioned him as to why he doubted. Peter’s doubt and fear brought failure to himself, but as soon as he called out for help from Jesus he readily helped him. When they came into the ship the wind stopped. Then all those who were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying the Jesus was the Son of God.

Doubt causes fear resulting in loss of faith and yet when calling on God will bring success. Give God a chance to work in you, rather than having alternate plans to work for yourself with your own wisdom and strength.
