BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN
Leslie M. John
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted ” (Matthew 5:4)
The second characteristic trait Jesus wanted the citizens of His kingdom to have is to “mourn”. He said those who mourn shall be comforted. What is that mourning Jesus is talking about? Is it the worldly way of expressing sorrow over person’s death by wearing black clothes? No, Jesus was not talking about the worldly way of manifestation of sorrow over financial loss or loss of someone who is closely related etc., but He was teaching as to how His followers, who mourn over their sins, will be comforted. He was saying that blessed is the one who comes to Him in true repentance of his sins and that they will be comforted and have a place in His kingdom.
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20 ESV)
The Lord says, happy are those who grieve over their sins and repent that they may be comforted. They are those who need salvation, and they are those who, after realizing the want of spiritual knowledge, feel the necessity to improve upon it. Jesus says to those who take pride in their worldly knowledge and possessions that they are wretched, miserable, and poor, blind, and naked. He says to them to buy from him gold tried in the fire, white raiment, and eye-salve, in order that they may be rich, that they may cover their shame, and that they may see (cf. Revelation 3:17-18).
It is the godly grief that produces repentance which leads to salvation.
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV))
Prophet Isiah spoke about Lord Jesus and said…
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound” (Isaiah 61:1)
Jesus spoke about Himself saying…
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18)
“Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word”. (Isaiah 66:1-2)
Salvation belongs to Lord Jesus Christ and there is no name under heaven whereby a man can receive everlasting life and be with Him forever and ever.
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12)
