THE HEAD CORNER STONE

by Leslie John

Leslie M. John

“The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner” (Psalms 118:22)Peter and John, the disciples of Jesus Christ, preached the Gospel and the resurrection from the dead. They healed a lame man in the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

Their ministry was blessed and the number of believers increased from three thousand to five thousand. This kind of preaching, and miracles, in the name of Jesus, grieved the high priest Annas, Caiaphas, and Alexander, who thought that the preaching belonged to them, and there is no resurrection from the dead. Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection, and as they were against this teaching they laid hands on Peter and John, the disciples of Jesus, for a trial the next day.

The elders, scribes, Annas, the high priest and high priest’s kindred gathered at Jerusalem and questioned the authority by which they healed the lame man, and preached the resurrection from the dead. Peter, then, filled with Holy Spirit, spoke to them and said to them very firmly that they preached and healed the lame man in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom they crucified, and whom God raised from the dead.

Lord Jesus Christ is the head corner stone, whom these elders, Pharisees, Sadducees rejected. God set him as the Chief corner stone. David prophesied about Jesus, who was the stone, that the builders rejected, yet the LORD made him the head stone of the corner.

“And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner” (Mark 12:10)

Peter and John, the disciples of Jesus, who walked with him, witnessed that Jesus was the stone, whom the Jews rejected, but he became the head stone of the corner. They affirm that there is no other name under heaven where anyone can find salvation.

One may object to this preaching but the Bible says it very firmly that there is no salvation except by believing that Jesus is the Savior. Peter and John, the Apostles, who were not learned, or educated, boldly said these things because they were with Jesus and took knowledge from him, who is the only begotten Son of God. The accusers attempted to execute the disciples of Jesus but did not find any cause to punish them, and let them go.

“Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner” (1 Peter 2:7) [Cf. Acts 4:1-14, Ps 118:21-23. Isa. 28:16, Ro 9:33, Eph. 2:20, 1Pe 2:7]
