THE LORD ANSWERS PRAYERS

by Leslie John

Leslie M. John

And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; (Exodus 3:7)

The children of Israel served as slaves in Egypt for four hundred and when they cried to God He heard them, knew their sorrows and helped them out from their taskmasters. The LORD delivered the children of Israel with His mighty hand and outstretched arm from the bondage of slavery under Pharaoh and led them through wilderness from Egypt out unto Canaan.

When the plagues came upon the land of Egypt at the behest of the LORD, He safeguarded the children of Israel in the land of Goshen. They were neither affected by those pestilences nor were their cattle suffered diseases. God spared the first born children of all the Israelites by passing over their homes on seeing the blood on the door posts, but killed every first born of Egyptians including that of Pharaoh.

Pharaoh, his army and chariots were drowned in the Red sea. God turned bitter water into sweet water at ‘Marah” for the sake of Israelites when they murmured for water. God provided heavenly food, the ‘manna’ for them every day and quails every evening. The manna tasted like coriander and like wafers dipped in honey and quails were meat food for them, yet they murmured against God. The angel of the LORD stood as pillar of fire behind them while they walked slowly on the dry land in the midst of the Red Sea. God protected them from Pharaoh who moved fast with his army in his chariots to capture the children of Israel.

In spite of God delivering them from the bondage of slavery and leading them to the Promised Land the children of Israel murmured throughout their journey which resulted in their wandering in the wilderness for forty years and none but Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, of the generation that left Egypt reached Canaan, the land that flowed with milk and honey. Even Moses, their leader did not enter Canaan, because He violated God’s command at one point of time.

Man in his best state is vanity simply for the reason that he is made of dust of the ground. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve man has to live by hard work until he returns to the ground. Man is dust and he will return to dust. (Genesis 2:7, Genesis 3:19) It is God’s grace that we are saved from perishing eternally. As psalmist says God knows our frame and remembers that we are made of dust. (Psalm 103:14). He hears us when we cry to Him and answers our prayers. He gives salvation to those who call upon Him.

Later in due course of time after King Solomon, the ‘House of Israel’ was carried away captive by Assyrians who spoke a different tongue that they did not understand.

He taught them precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little and there a little just as father and mother would teach their child the alphabets of a language, and yet they disobeyed God and worshipped idols resulting in Assyrians talking to them different tongue that they did not understand and Assyrians taking them captive (Isaiah 28:10-13).

God told the children of Israel to make record of how he provided them food in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. God told them to store an “Omer” full with the ‘manna’ to show to their children in the subsequent generations as a sign for them proclaiming the wonderful way God provided them food.

Jesus died for our sake bearing our sin upon him. He was buried and rose from the dead on the third day and ascended into heaven and seated on the right hand of the Majesty. He will come back soon! Believe in Jesus and remember His death, burial and in his resurrection, and ascension. As a father sitting with his arms spread to receive his lost child God is waiting for Israelites to accept Jesus as their Messiah.

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: (Isaiah 55:6)
